During this self-discovery exercise, he remained away from home for two years after which he returned home and joined RSS as a pracharak in 1971. Soon enough, he was inducted as a campaigner in RSS and was appreciated by the organization for his commitment and skills in organizations.

In 1987, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. Modi rapidly went up in the ranks because he was an efficient organizer and contacted the grassroots-level organization well. He worked very actively in the BJP campaign for the elections to the Gujarat Vidhan Sabha in 1990 and again in 1995 when the BJP won the election and formed the government in Gujarat.
